The following statement on the passing of MP Mauril Bélanger was issued by Jacques Frémont, president and vice-chancellor of the University of Ottawa:

With deep sadness and emotion, the University of Ottawa has learned of the passing of Mauril Bélanger, a great friend and renowned alumnus.

Mr. Bélanger, who held a Bachelor of Arts degree from our university, dedicated 21 years of his life to serving Canadians as the member of Parliament for Ottawa-Vanier.

University Chancellor Calin Rovinescu and Board of Governors Chair Robert Giroux join me in offering our deepest condolences on behalf of the entire University community to Mr. Bélanger’s family, friends and parliamentary colleagues, as well as to all Franco-Ontarians.

Mauril Bélanger was a dedicated and passionate man who devoted his life to fighting for many causes, particularly those of linguistic minorities and Canadian francophone communities, especially in Ontario.

Mauril Bélanger Lecture Series

Last spring, the University of Ottawa paid tribute to Mr. Bélanger by creating a lecture series in his name, to highlight his exceptional contributions to his alma mater, as well as to the Franco-Ontarian community.

The Mauril Bélanger Lecture Series, under the auspices of the Jean-Luc Pepin Research Chair, will be launched this fall. It aims to foster discussion on public policy issues, a topic that was dear to the late MP.
